In the fall of 2014, Estacado High School students participated in a project based learning activity entitled "Reform East Lubbock." Led by their AP (Advanced Placement) History teacher, Mr. Jacob Way, the objective of the project was to research the social history of East Lubbock. Students began examining the reform movements of the Progressive era, as well as how laws and legislation during that era have impacted East Lubbock. Additionally, students interviewed residents from the East Lubbock community where in results of the survey would be the catalyst for drafting legislation aimed at promoting social justice and solving social problems such as education, poverty and racism in East Lubbock. In May, 2015, four students traveled to Washington, D.C. to present the bills to the office of Lubbock's Congressional representative, Randy Neugebauer. A powerful learning experience for the students and teacher, the project exemplifies the words of Bell Hooks, "There must exist a paradigm, a practical model for social change that includes an understanding of ways to transform consciousness that are linked to efforts to transform structures."
